What a Takeoff Template Actually Does

A structural steel takeoff converts drawing dimensions into a quantity: linear feet of each shape, multiplied by a unit weight, summed into tons per member group. It's a measurement exercise, distinct from pricing — the takeoff answers "how much steel," the BOQ answers "how much does it cost." Keeping the two separate (but linked) makes it far easier to catch a quantity error before it's buried inside a dollar figure.

Structure

Group by Member Role, Not Just Shape

A takeoff organized purely by shape size ("all W12x26") is easy to build but hard to price, because the same shape might be used as a beam in one location and a bracing member in another, with very different fabrication and erection costs. Instead, group by structural role — the same grouping your BOQ will use:

Columns

Split further into perimeter/corner, internal, and upper-level — section sizes typically shrink with height as axial load reduces.

Beams

Primary floor beams vs. secondary/infill beams vs. transfer beams/girders — transfer members are dramatically heavier per linear foot.

Bracing

Vertical (lateral load) bracing vs. horizontal plan bracing / floor diaphragm bracing.

Roof Framing

Trusses, purlins and girts, each with different wind-uplift design requirements.

Unit Weights

Where Unit Weights Come From

Rolled shape weights (W-shapes, channels, angles) come from the AISC Steel Construction Manual shapes database — look up the nominal weight per foot for the exact designation shown on the drawings. For plate material (base plates, gusset plates, stiffeners), calculate volume (length × width × thickness) and multiply by steel density, 7,850 kg/m³ (490 lb/ft³). Built-up sections (welded box columns, plate girders) need to be broken into their component plates and summed.

Allowances

Wastage & Connection Allowances

Standard practice adds a cutting/fabrication wastage allowance, commonly 3–6% of theoretical weight, plus an allowance for bolts, welds and small connection material if these aren't itemized separately. Document whichever percentage you use directly in the takeoff — a reviewer should never have to guess where a rounding buffer came from.

Integration

Feeding the Takeoff Into Your BOQ

The cleanest approach: enter takeoff quantities once, in the BOQ's Quantity column, then have a separate Material Take-off tab pull those same quantities back via formula for an independent tonnage cross-check against a benchmark lb/SF ratio. That way there's exactly one place to update a quantity, and the sanity-check tab can never silently drift out of sync with the priced document.

It can be, but it's cleaner as a linked tab within the same workbook — that way quantities can never get out of sync between the two.

Excel or Google Sheets handle a manual takeoff fine for most commercial projects. Larger or more repetitive projects sometimes use dedicated takeoff software that measures directly off PDF or CAD drawings.

Aim to work from Issued-for-Construction drawings where possible. A takeoff from preliminary drawings should be clearly marked provisional and revisited once drawings are finalized.
